University of the Arts London
In March 2023, London College of Fashion (LCF) at the University of the Arts London (UAL) collaborated with Selyn, Sri Lanka's only fair trade-certified handloom manufacturer, to integrate blockchain technology into traditional handloom textiles. This partnership aimed to enhance supply chain transparency and promote sustainable fashion practices.
As part of this initiative, over 25 LCF students designed the "Sandra" Clapping Bag, redefining the use of handloom textiles by incorporating blockchain technology. Each bag featured an NFC tag that, when scanned, provided detailed information about the production process, including the origin of fibers, dyeing methods, the artisans involved, and the environmental and community impact. This level of transparency was achieved through a partnership with PaperTale, a blockchain company specializing in supply chain traceability.
This collaboration exemplifies how traditional craftsmanship can be harmoniously blended with modern technology to promote ethical and sustainable practices in the fashion industry.
